MEET OPAL
Opal is a gentle and affectionate little Shih Tzu mix who is beginning her journey toward trust and comfort in a loving home. At just 9 pounds, she brings a sweet spirit and soft energy that makes her a wonderful quiet companion. She’s still settling in and learning the rhythm of life in a new environment, and every day brings new progress.
PERSONALITY
Opal is a happy, curious girl with an overall gentle demeanor. While she can be a bit timid at times, she’s already showing that she wants to bond and enjoy life with people.
- Sweet and affectionate
- Enjoys cuddling on the couch
- Very tolerant of grooming and handling
- Quiet and polite with both people and pets
- Good with large dogs and cats
TRAINING AND HABITS
Opal is still adjusting to new routines and will thrive with a patient adopter who can help her build confidence. She’s learning crate training and has had some accidents, but with consistency and a correctly sized crate, she’ll continue to improve.
- Crate trained with some occasional barking
- Still working on house training
- Has not yet been leash-walked but is comfortable in a fenced yard
- Learning to come inside confidently after outdoor time
- Picky with food — she prefers wet food for now and is transitioning from a likely diet of table scraps
IDEAL HOME
Opal is looking for a quiet, patient household where she can settle in at her own pace and be gently encouraged to blossom.
- Calm home with adults or respectful older children
- Would enjoy the company of another calm dog but would also do fine as a solo dog
- Access to a fenced yard is a plus as she builds leash skills
- A household that will offer routine, gentle encouragement, and time to adjust
- Perfect for someone seeking a low-energy cuddle companion

All adult dogs, cats, and kittens are altered prior to adoption. Puppies too young to be altered at the time of adoption must be brought to our partner vet in Ashland, VA for spay or neuter paid for by Operation Paws for Homes by 6 months of age. Adopters may choose to have the procedure done at their own vet before 6 months of age and be reimbursed the amount that the rescue would pay our partner vet in Ashland.
This dog's bio is based off the experiences of the foster and/or volunteers of OPH as well as any information that we received from the shelter or previous owner. This is very important because it means that while they may act one way in the foster’s home, you may experience something different in your home.
