About Chance
Meet Chance, a 5-year-old, 61-pound gentle soul who’s come a long way from Florida’s hurricane relief efforts to find his forever family. He’s a calm, affectionate pup who enjoys life’s simple pleasures—sniffing around the yard, giving kisses, and relaxing with his favorite people. With his easygoing personality and affectionate nature, Chance is ready to settle into a loving home where he can be your loyal companion.
Personality
Foster mom says Chance is an "absolute gem" that her whole family loves! He's a laid-back boy who’s happiest when he’s exploring his surroundings with his nose. While he’s not overly playful, he will happily trot around the yard once he’s taken in all the new scents. He’s a big fan of cuddles & kisses and will gladly greet you or other dogs with some slobbery affection. Chance is a “velcro dog” who adores being close to his people. He loves cuddles and snuggles, bully sticks, and all things FOOD! He is very food-motivated and is fully house-trained and crate-trained.
Energy Level & Play Style
Chance is calm by nature but shows his curious side when there’s something to explore. He gets excited seeing other dogs and can be playful, though he tires out quickly and is content to settle down afterward. He’s more interested in taking in his surroundings than in high-energy play, making him a great match for a family who enjoys leisurely walks and quiet companionship. Although he enjoys walks, he doesn't require a ton of exercise. He loves all toys (especially chew toys) but will destroy a plushie in just a few minutes.
Skills and Training
* Fully house trained, and crate trained, although he can sleep anywhere.
* Perfect house guest: not destructive, doesn't counter surf and doesn't lunge for food.
* He loves all people and other dogs.
* Smart! Knows basic commands - sit, stay & leave it. Food motivated and learns quickly.
* Rides well in the car when secured to avoid roaming. He'd probably prefer shot gun.
* He naps quietly while foster mom works at her desk.
Chance has many wonderful qualities and he is working on his leash manners. He’s strong and can tend to pull, especially when he’s excited to explore. He does walk perfectly with the help of an easy walk harness. In the car, he’s a bit of an “explorer” and likes to move around, so securing him during rides is recommended. Chance knows “sit”, “stay”, and “leave it” and will continue learning for treats!
Companionship
Chance’s calm and loving nature makes him a fantastic companion for a family who wants a loyal, laid-back dog. He enjoys spending time with people, does well with other dogs, and has a way of making everyone feel loved and appreciated.
Love and Affection
If you’re looking for a mellow, affectionate dog who loves to be close, Chance is your guy! He’s a gentle, loving pup who will happily share his kisses and charm with you every day. He is super loveable and affectionate. His foster family smothers him with kisses, and he licks them right back. Chance is ready to find his forever family and start his next chapter surrounded by love.

Note: This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito producing a positive test in six months. The dog was treated for the disease prior to transport north. Potential adopters will receive detailed information on the disease and their role in completing the recovery process from OPH’s heartworm coordinator. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Read more about heartworm disease here.
All adult dogs, cats, and kittens are altered prior to adoption. Puppies too young to be altered at the time of adoption must be brought to our partner vet in Ashland, VA for spay or neuter paid for by Operation Paws for Homes by 6 months of age. Adopters may choose to have the procedure done at their own vet before 6 months of age and be reimbursed the amount that the rescue would pay our partner vet in Ashland.
This dog's bio is based off the experiences of the foster and/or volunteers of OPH as well as any information that we received from the shelter or previous owner. This is very important because it means that while they may act one way in the foster’s home, you may experience something different in your home.
